The tradeoff for that flexibility is a slightly more involved wiring run between the supply and the track.

Sizing follows the same logic as the in-built version: total the fixture wattage on the circuit, match it to 100W or 200W, and never assume one supply can serve two separate track runs — each circuit needs its own dedicated unit, even if two circuits combined would technically fit under one supply's rated capacity.

How does the driver connect to the track if it's not mounted at the connection point?

Via the Input Module — T20-G (0.5-metre cable) for shorter runs to the track connection, or T20-H (2-metre cable) for greater distances within the ceiling void. Both are available in 2-wire and 4-wire versions depending on the circuit's control requirements.

Positioning the standalone supply within the ceiling void still needs to respect reasonable cable-run limits to the track connection, even with the flexibility a remote driver location offers — an excessively long cable run between supply and track can introduce its own voltage drop issue, defeating part of the reason for choosing a centralised supply location in the first place.

Is there a maximum practical distance between the standalone power supply and the track connection?
